In March 2014, the group made up of the Hyper U, Super U, U Express and Utile names substituted the canned packaging for a selection of its canned dried vegetable-based preparations (beans, red and white tomatoes, chickpeas, lentils) with Tetra Recart® carton packaging by Tetra Pak.
Like cans (whose inner coating may potentially be made with bisphenol A), this packaging withstands the sterilization process. In addition to being free of bisphenol A, this packaging is interesting for several reasons: it is recyclable, and its light weight and compact shape result in lower transport costs.
According to our information, this is the second time (the first was Casino) that a large distribution group has chosen this alternative over cans. It could therefore become a more widely used solution to eliminate bisphenol A from containers for certain types of food.
