Germany has submitted a dossier to ECHA to restrict a range of bisphenols

Edited on 12/01/2022
Summary:
Germany proposes to restrict the use in mixtures and articles of bisphenol A and bisphenols with endocrine disrupting properties for the environment.
News text:

The German authorities propose to limit (in mixtures and articles) the concentration of bisphenol A and bisphenol derivatives with endocrine disrupting properties for the environment to 10 ppm or 0.001% by weight.

This restriction would not apply if:

- the substances in scope of the restriction are either covalently bond to any type of matrix (i.e. via functioning as a cross-linker) or used as intermediates in the manufacture of polymers

- contact of these substances to aqueous media in any form (i.e. also cleaning) can be excluded during their reasonable and foreseeable use throughout the service life of the mixtures and articles

- the migration limit of these substances in the respective mixtures and articles does not exceed 0.04 mg/L over the entire service life

This proposal will be evaluated by ECHA's Scientific Committees for Risk Assessment (RAC) and Socio-economic Analysis (SEAC). Consultations will be opened once the Committees have agreed that the proposals comply with the legal requirements for a restriction proposal under REACH. The compliance check will take place at the November/December meetings of the Committees.
